The need for museums to pivot
The cultural and leisure landscape is shifting fast. Audience habits have moved toward on-demand, participatory, mobile experiences; core museum visitors are aging; casual attendance is unpredictable; government funding is declining; and philanthropy is changing. Museums are at a critical inflection point, trying to adapt and position themselves for the future.
Several forces are driving this urgency. Change is outpacing traditional museum building design. Next-generation visitors expect personalized, participatory, socially shareable experiences, while next-generation funders want projects that are measurable, values-driven, and socially relevant. At the same time, Gen X and Gen Z still want tactile, in-person encounters. AI is also reshaping museum operations and visitor experiences, while raising questions about authenticity. Large, complex exhibitions like the Met’s Man Ray show or Science Storms at the Museum of Science and Industry remain essential, but museums also need greater agility to test, invent, and pivot toward new models of engagement.
